Maths confidence doesn't develop overnight. It grows through small successes, encouragement, practice and positive learning experiences.
Here are some simple ways parents can support their child.
1. Avoid Saying “I Was Never Good at Maths”
Children often learn from what they hear at home.
If children regularly hear adults say things like:
“I'm terrible at maths.”
or
“Maths has always been difficult for me.”
they may begin to believe that struggling with maths is something they should expect.
Instead, try using positive language:
“Let's work through it together.”
“It's okay if you don't know it yet.”
“Let's try a different strategy.”
Your words can help your child see maths as a skill that can improve with practice.
2. Find Out What Is Making Maths Difficult
Maths anxiety can sometimes come from a specific area of difficulty.
Your child might struggle with:
Times tables
Fractions
Division
Word problems
Mental maths
Reading mathematical questions
Working quickly
Remembering different steps
Rather than assuming your child is struggling with all of maths, ask:
“Which part feels difficult?”

3. Don't Rush Your Child

If your child is still thinking, give them time before providing an answer.
Instead of:
“Come on, what's the answer?”
try:
“Take your time. What do you know so far?”

4. Use Everyday Activities to Practise Maths
Maths doesn't always need to involve a textbook or worksheet.
Everyday activities can provide natural opportunities to practise.
At the supermarket
Ask:

Ask:
“If we need two cups of flour, how much would we need for half the recipe?”
While travelling
Ask:

5. Focus on Understanding, Not Speed
Being quick at maths doesn't always mean understanding maths.
Some children become anxious when they believe they must calculate everything immediately.
Encourage your child to slow down and think.

“Can you explain your thinking?”
